BHAAN, the theatre group, started its journey on 2014, 27th April, with the staging of Mohamad Zafar Iqbal I’d play “eki jayega o ek I samay”, and an adaptation of Arun Mukhopadhyay’s “Premik Mithyuk”. After this, it once again staged a full length play “Good bye Election” written by the director himself at Tapan Theatre. This set the pace for a more promising future for the group. In 2015, it once again staged two productions, one was, “Teluram Terrorist” which is much acclaimed and has been staged a number of times because of the very relevant question it raises. The other production again deserves mention because it is an “eco political” play which stands out for being very apt in the present context. Both these are written and directed by the founder director of this group, which makes it all the more praiseworthy.
Since then Bhaan successfully staged it’s productions in some very prestigious theatre halls of Kolkata like Gyan Mancha, Tapan Theatre, Muktangan, Girish Manch etc. and now it will also perform outside Kolkata at Jhargram and Budge Budge. Within such a short period of its beginning, their endeavour is really commendable.
More so, Bhaan group engages itself in yet another praiseworthy activity. It regularly publishes a magazine “Bhaan” on performing arts, since its inception and till date it published six. Each of these focussed on various aspects of performing art apart from drama. It tried to reach out to some very interesting but lesser known forms of performance.
Moreover, Bhaan group also organised seminars regularly on theatre and other such forms of entertainment at Bangla Academy, Charukala Sabha kaksha. In these yearly seminars, eminent personalities shared their thoughts which included Sri Soumitra Basu, Sri Ashoke Mukhopadhyay, Sri Pradip Bhattacharya, Sri Sekhar Samaddar, Sri Subhash Gangopadhyay, Sri Indranil Mukhopadhyay.
Needless to say, Bhaan has multidimensional engagements. Till date all these activities were either self financed, or received patronage. It is only recently that it received an invitation for a call show. After three years of its journey with such varied activities, Bhaan now desires to apply for government funds.
